Types of Flexible Extraction Arms

“Extraction arms are designed for general and specific usage”

Industrial extraction arms enable effective source-capture of dust, fumes, aerosols, smoke, and other airborne containments.

Flexible Extraction Arm designs can be constructed of solid pipe sections, internal knuckles, and flex hose at joints or flex hose with a rigid support structure and external joints. Both arm designs have advantages depending on the application and fume/dust collected.  Our experience indicates most of our clients have upfront preferences that can be accommodated by reviewing the application.

Factors to consider when selecting an arm include airstream constituents, airstream temperatures, explosive materials, etc. Utilizing the right product helps employers comply with industry workplace health and safety standards.

General Fume and Dust Extraction Arm Types

Extraction arms can be divided into types based on application (industrial or laboratory), placement (hanging, bench top, or telescopic), and materials of construction. The extraction arms can be used as a single exhaust application, on a dust collection system using multiple arms, or on a mobile dust collector.

Industrial Extraction Arms

Used in industrial environments where heavy-duty construction is required and where abrasive applications are the norm. This includes the collection of welding fumes, abrasive dust, smoke, and chemicals.

Industrial arm features:

  • Minimal pressure drop due to a completely external system
  • Hose diameter: 4”, 5”, 6”, 8”, and 10”
  • Arm length: 5’ to 36’
  • Mounting options: ceiling, floor stanchion, or wall

Laboratory Fume Extraction Arms

Laboratory extraction arms are used for capturing vapors, fumes, odors, etc. They are used in clinical and research institutions, biotech companies, pharmaceutical companies, chemical plants, and corporate research labs.

Laboratory arm features:

  • Minimal pressure drop due to the external support system
  • Tube diameter: 2”, 3”, and 4”
  • Arm length: 2’ to 8’-6”
  • Mounting options: ceiling, floor stanchion, bench top, or wall
  • Polypropylene, ESD, and ATEX versions are available

Bench Top Dust Extraction Arms

The bench top mounted arm is used on applications that have duct connections underneath the work surface table. Bench top-mounted arms can also be used on small portable dust collectors where they are often used in welding applications.

Benchtop extraction arms features:

  • Minimal pressure drop
  • Hose diameter: 3”, 5”, 6”, and 8”
  • Arm length: 3’ to 14’
  • Mounting options: benchtop

ATEX Rated Fume Extraction Arms

Explosion rated extraction arms are used when handling explosive gases and dust. These extraction arms meet the requirements of the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU Category 2 for gases and dust for Zones 1 and 21 (areas where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation).

ATEX rated extraction arms features:

  • Minimal pressure drop
  • Stable grounded structure with EX coating
  • Anti-static hose
  • Two hose models:
    • EXC with black chemical resistant polyethylene (PE) hose
    • EXD with semi-transparent white polyurethane (PU) hose for dust-related pollutants.
  • Hose diameter: 4”, 5”, 6”, and 8”
  • Arm length: 5’ to 23’
  • Mounting options: ceiling, floor stanchion, or wall
  • ATEX marked

Stainless Steel Fume Extraction Arms

Stainless steel extraction arms are used in corrosive or food applications. Depending on the application, 304 and 316 stainless steel options are available.

Stainless steel extraction arms features:

  • Minimal pressure drop
  • 304 or 316 stainless steel available
  • FDA grade antistatic flexible hose for food applications
  • Complete wash-down arms available.
  • Hose diameter: 3”, 5”, 6”, and 8”
  • Arm length: 5’ to 14’
  • Mounting options: ceiling, floor stanchion, bench top, or wall

Telescopic Fume Extraction Arms

Telescopic extraction arms are designed to fit into confined spaces or applications when the operator needs to “compress” the arm out of the way.

Extraction arm features:

  • Minimal pressure drop
  • Compresses to 3’ and extends to 7’
  • FDA grade antistatic flexible hose for food applications
  • Hose diameter:  5” or  6”
  • Mounting options: ceiling, floor stanchion, or wall

Food & Cleanroom Extraction Arms

Cleanroom Extraction Arms are easy to assemble and disassemble during routine maintenance.

Food & Cleanroom Extraction Arms

Food-Grade Cleanroom Extraction Arms are specifically designed to be used in industries with stringent hygiene requirements such as pharmaceuticals, hospitals, and food manufacturing.

Extraction arm features:

  • Food-grade certified hose
  • Food-grade certified stainless steel gas spring
  • Ceiling or floor mounting bracket
  • Airflow damper
  • Dual grounding for maximal safety
  • Minimal number of arm components
  • Quick hose release for easy cleaning
